Is this your child's first pair of ballet slippers or maybe yours? Are you wondering how to attach the elastics? The only method is to sew the elastics to the shoe either by hand or machine. As the sew by hand method is accessible to everyone, it is demonstrated below.

Generally, a single elastic is preferred for younger children's ballet slippers.  More advanced dancers and adults may use two elastics in the crisscross method.  Here the single elastic method is provided.

Proper placement of elastics will make certain the shoe is secure and looks its best. Following the simple steps below will ensure perfectly placed elastics for dancing comfort.

You will need:

thread, sewing needle, straight pins, scissors, pencil

Step 1:

Placing Elastic:

To determine elastic placement, fold down the heel of the shoe to make a straight line across. Mark the corner of each side with a pencil.

Step 2:

Securing Elastic:

Sew one end of the elastic making sure not to sew through the drawstring.  Ensure the elastic is secure by stitching down one side and up the other.

Step 3:

Fitting Elastic:

Put the ballet slipper on and measure the length of elastic require for a snug fit.  Sew the second side of elastic.

Step 4:
Tightening the Drawstrings:

Tighten the drawstring being careful to pull from both sides and tie in a double knot.  Trim the drawstrings leaving not less than 5 cm from the knot. This leaves room for adjustment.  Tuck drawstrings into the shoe.

Your task is completed!  Happy Dancing!
